Maurice Creek

Freshman Maurice Creek led the resurgent Hoosiers in PPG (16.4) and steals (17) before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

A bad situation was made worse Monday when leading freshman scorer in the Big-Ten, and third leading freshman scorer in the nation, Maurice Creek, went down with a season ending knee injury in Indiana’s 90-42 pummeling of visiting Bryant.

Reports indicate that Creek will undergo surgery today that should put him out for the rest of the season.

The loss for Indiana comes at a critical point in the season, just as they are about to enter Big Ten play Thursday afternoon against Michigan.

Creek has been Indiana’s star this season. Averaging 16.4 points-per-game and showing up big when it matters with a 31-point effort against rival Kentucky and a 29-point showing shortly after against North Carolina Central.

It’s hard to conceive of a worse thing happening to a team already trying to overcome tremendous obstacles; it will be interesting to see how the team responds, and if they will be able to overcome the loss of their best player and improve upon their 1-17 Big Ten record last year.

Look for Mr. Indiana, Jordan Hulls, to replace Creek.
