For the first time in the program’s history, the Minnesota women’s soccer team has advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

Putting them in prime position to take the second round win, and make history in the Gophers (22-3-0) going further than ever in the NCAA tournament, Molly Rouse found the back of the net to put the Gophers up 1-0 after only two minutes of game time.  Teammate Lindsey Schwartz chimed in with her own contributions, chalking up a score and an assist against the over-matched South Dakota State (15-5-1).

Minnesota’s tough defense and control of the ball help hold their early 2-0 lead to take the victory.  The Gophers are undefeated (20-0) when scoring first this season.

Gopher keeper Lindsey Dare blanked the Jackrabbits – stopping all two shots on goal – for her 17th shutout of the season and a team record and Big Ten record for most shutouts in a season.

Minnesota squares off against the nation’s top seed, No 1 Notre Dame, for their Sweet Sixteen match-up on either November 21, 22 or 23.  The official game date and time was yet to be announced at time of posting but will be announced Sunday, November 16.
