1. MICHIGAN - The Wolverines could be our first wire-to-wire winner of any sport’s power rankings. Big Blue jumped out of the gates with a 5-0 weekend that included a 10-inning triumph over Purdue and back-to-back wins in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge. I like teams that make our conference look good.

PSU Report 2/21
In perhaps the ugliest win in Penn State history, the Nitts defeated the No. 16 Illini 38-33 on Wednesday. It seems obvious that the 71 total points scored marked a record low for the arena (the Illini’s Assembly Hall). Some might say the game was defense-driven. I would argue it was more the horrible shooting (PSU went 28% from the field and Illinois went 30%) and turnovers (PSU’s 13 to Illinois’ 15) that had the largest impact on the outcome of the game. No matter how ugly, though, the Nittany Lions got the win and are just a game behind Illinois in the standings and two and a half games back from MSU at the top of the standings with four games remaining in the regular season.

Boiler Bulletin 2/19
That’s right, your very own No. 19 Boilermaker ballers dealt out a royal ass-kicking on No. 5 Michigan State on Tuesday, 72-54. Perhaps it was the fresh new gear the team was sporting that got them all vamped up and ready to play. Or perhaps it was their suffocating defense. They forced 22 turnovers and blocked eight shots in the contest, holding the Spartans to just 33% shooting. On the offensive side, JuJuan Johnson continues to lead and put up a game-best 17 points. Robbie Hummel, back for his first game since missing three games with a stress fracture in his vertebrae, chipped in 11 points of his own. This big win, coming at the end of the season, could influence the selection committee into a higher seed.

Minnesota Memo 2/18
Only a game back from first place in the conference standings, the Minne women’s basketball team faces No. 17 (and first in the Big Ten) Ohio State on Thursday. A win won’t automatically tie them for the conference lead though; Michigan State would also have to lose because the Spartans are currently tied with OSU with a 11-3 conference record. The Gophers are coming into their next contest with a lot of momentum off the buzzer beating defeat of Michigan with a three from Brittany McCoy. If they can stay close with OSU, history tells us they have a good shot at the W. The Gophers have won all seven of their games decided by six points or less.

Penn State Report 2-7-09
OhNoPa - I really never thought this day would come for me. I love me some JoePa. I grew up in Pennsylvania and enjoyed the Penn State football experience as I began to appreciate all this man brought to the game of football and the university. But the day has come… I now believe that perhaps the time has come for JoePa to retire. I will argue until his death or mine that he has earned the right to end it on his own terms at the time he decides… but I think it is time for him to decide to call it quits.
