The Herald Times Online, a southern Indiana news outlet, just reported that star QB Kellen Lewis has been dismissed from the football team. The report surfaced just over an hour ago, and IUHoosiers.com has removed Lewis from its website.

The cause of the dismissal is still unknown, but it is believed to be drug use that started and ended Lewis’ demise. He was suspended at the beginning of last year’s football season, but Indiana University tightly protected the reasons for his punishment.

Lewis broke on to the scene two years ago as a dual-threat quarterback that could change a game faster than Kevin Garnett can get a curse word out. He and WR James Hardy (now in the NFL) became one of the most dynamic threats in the Big 10 before Hardy was lost to the draft and Lewis began his alleged drug use.

Last season, the team brought Lewis back from his original suspension and experimented with him at wide receiver. Lewis was much more ineffective in that role, and it was unclear what position he would play in the coming season.

More details to follow.
